Divergence is an innovative contemporary traditional trio led by Edinburgh based multi-instrumentalist Freya Rae. Blending original, traditionally inspired compositions with an adventurous palette of flute, clarinet, clarsach, saxophone, tongue drum, synth, and electronic effects, the band creates a vibrant, modern sound rooted in tradition.
Joined by percussionist Tim Lane and clarsach/synth player Siannie Moodie, the trio reimagines the boundaries of folk music with creativity and flair. They also collaborate with Galician gaita and saxophone player Pablo Dalama, adding an international dimension. Alongside performances, they offer workshops and educational sessions.
They’ve had a strong first year performing, including their premiere at Edinburgh TradFest (May 2025), their album launch at the Pianodrome (27 June 2025), and appearances at Knockengorroch (May 2025), Kelso Folk Festival (September 2025), Edinburgh Folk Festival (October 2025), and the Eskdalemuir Community Hub (October 2025).
